Tracey received her BFA from Middle Tennessee State University, and a MFA in Fine Arts from the University of Minnesota. After graduation, she interned (and served as temporary staff) at the Minnesota State Arts Board, in the Percent for Art, Public Art Program.
Led by an interest in community-based work, she began her position as a VISTA tenant organizer in November 2005 and has been on staff since December 2006. Her work as an organizer for three years partially focused on the MN Tenants Alliance, working with a core group of tenant leaders on policy and leadership development. She has additionally worked with residents on a number of campaigns, preserving section 8 subsidies at individual apartment complexes.
In 2009, Tracey volunteered with staff from Articulture, a local community arts organization, to co-facilitate a course on community-based art. The group engaged women living in a local family shelter on creating art about self to engage a broader community about domestic violence issues.
