High School Speech Information

HOME Line teaches students in high school classes how to rent responsibly.  To date, we have sent speakers to 97 different high schools (1,085 different classes—29,487 students).  These free classes, which typically last an hour but can be tailored to any class time, focus on the types of issues first-time renters encounter:

  • The Application Process
  • Roommates—Why They are Important and How to Choose One
  • How Much Can I Afford for Rent?
  • What to pay attention to when agreeing to a lease
  • What Will Get Me Evicted?
  • How to Get Back a Security Deposit?
  • How do I get repairs made
  • Discrimination, when is it illegal and what can you do about it?

HOME Line speakers have been recognized three times by Best Prep (formerly B.E.E.F. Business Economic Education Foundation) for these speeches in high school classrooms.

Typically, these speeches are given to Independent Living classes and are very popular at alternative schools.  We have also given these speeches to assemblies with the entire senior class of schools.

To arrange for a speaker to come to your school, contact Managing Attorney Mike Vraa at (612)728-5770 (x113) or mikev@homelinemn.org.
