HOME Line occassionally will post unique internship openings, paid and unpaid, on this page.  Check back often if you are interested in opportunities at HOME Line to:

  • staff our free legal tenant hotline; provide advice to renters and learn about tenant/landlord law
  • door-knock and organize renters to collectively address substandard housing or keep rents affordable
  • work on public policy issues and engage tenants to affect laws that protect renters and promote affordable housing options

TENANT ORGANIZING & PUBLIC POLICY INTERNSHIPS

Interested in becoming an affordable housing advocate?

HOME Line’s Tenant Rights Campaign advocates and organizes with low-income renters for public policy that ensures all Minnesotans have safe, quality housing they can afford. HOME Line believes that the federal government should return to an aggressive support of affordable housing initiatives; state government should promote fair rental policy and target its affordable housing investments to housing for extremely low-income households and effective crisis prevention.

HOME Line believes:

  • Low-income renters should pay no more than 30% of their income for adequate housing.  Public resources should be made available so that any renter eligible for housing assistance can receive that assistance in a timely manner.
  • Low-income renters deserve to live in safe, decent, affordable housing.  Publicly-funded affordable housing should be provided the resources it needs to adequately operate and maintain that housing.  State and federal fair housing laws must provide low-income tenants appropriate protections in the marketplace.
  • Tenants deserve fair and equitable treatment in the court system to resolve disputes with landlords.

Assist HOME Line’s Public Policy Director in:

  • Developing communication materials so that low-income renters can understand how a “Minnesota Tenant Bill of Rights” could improve their living situations.
  • Providing public policy makers with information about their constituents’ struggles to afford and maintain affordable housing as well as what they can do to address those struggles.
  • Connecting low-income tenants and policy-makers through setting up and attending meetings at the Capitol.
  • Researching how changes in state and federal affordable housing policy will benefit Minnesota renters.

Gain experience in:

  • Grassroots organizing with low-income renters
  • Outreach / door knocking / petitioning
  • Meeting with policy-makers
  • Issue-advocacy campaign strategy
